ARCHITECTURE CULTURE & HISTORY 01

3 CREDIT HOURS

PROJECT 01A :  ONLINE FORUM

PROJECT 01C :  DURHAM CATHEDRAL (3D MODEL)

PROJECT 01B :  DURHAM CATHEDRAL (ANALYSIS BOARD)

For the first project, we were assigned to do a in-depth research about a historical building and to actually undertand it's design concept and how does the political, economy and technological factors influenced on the design of that sepcific building. In a group of 4, my group were assigned to do an in-depth research of the Durham Cathedral, located in the city of Durham, United Kingdom. This research is divided into 5 parts :

- Brief history of the place ( Benny Tan )

- Form & Shape ( Vady )

- Building materials & method of construction ( Pin Qi )

- Function and purpose of the building ( Chew Ung Heng)

- What makes the place significant ( Pin Qi & Benny Tan)

Culture History is a subject where a chronological survey of the developments of Western architecture from the beginning of time towards the period of Enlightenment, taking into considerations of the intellectual, aesthetic, technological, political and economic factors that has influenced the design of the buildings. These issues are explored with reference to major contemporary examples and the work and philosophy of significant exponents.

LEARNING OUTCOME

 1. To introduce basic architectural theory through consideration of intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships.

 2. To examine architectural history through a chronological survey of the development of Western architecture from the beginning of time towards the period of Enlightenment, taking into considerations of the intellectual, aesthetic, technological, political and economic factors that has influenced the design of the buildings

The next part of the project is to produce an A2 presentation board about the research that I have conducted form the online forum. What I analyzed was the plan, the sectional part and its natural lighting. For the plan, I did an exterior plan of the cathedral and then zoomed in towards the interior plan where a more detailed plan of the cathedral can be seen. A more detailed analysis can be seen in the pciture below :

This part of the project requires us to carve the model for the building that our group analyzed. We were required to make the model out of Balsa woods ONLY. My group did a unique approach of presenting the 3D model. What we did was to actually show one of the exterior side of the cathedral as well as showing a section of it at the same time. We created a sliding mechanism for the model in order to these two things. Below are the pictures of the model that me and my group made.

REFLECTION

Through this project I was able to recognise and understand appropriate verbal architectural terms when referring to different types of buildings, styles and their period of time. I also learned about how did architecture represent different historical times. By doing the presentation analysis board, I learned on how to document architectural languages and contextual relationships.

The 3D model made me realised on how beautiful the structure of the Durham Cathedral and how exquisite the details of its complexity.

Overall I enjoyed this module very much as I gained different types of abilities from the projects such as being independent by conducting research on the building, the ability to work as a team because honestly making that 3D model required a lot of workmanship and I’m actually happy with the teamwork of my group mates as well as the outcome of the model.
