BUILDING
MATERIALS
3 CREDIT HOURS
PROJECT 01 : SPACE OUT - THE MATERIAL CUBE
PROJECT 02A : MATERIALITY OF SPACE - AN EXPERIENTAL EXPLORATION (GROUP)
PROJECT 02B : MATERIALITY OF SPACE - AN EXPERIENTAL EXPLORATION (INDIVIDUAL)
This project is designed as an introduction to building materials that are commonly used in the local construction industry. We were required to construct cubes using the listed material to explore and understand building making in relation to materials, design considerations of material according to their properties and to finally understand how the intrinsic forms, limitations and boundaries of a material factor in a design process.
We were required to design and constuct TWO cubes with paper and wood material (each material, one cube)
Submission Requirements :
- To design and build a 12”x12”x12” inch paper and wood cube.
- The cube should be produced with this one material and a fastening system (glue, nails, screw, rope etc.) at the student’s discretion.
- The function of the cube is to define the volume of a 12”x12”x12” inch space. This does not mean to fill or to entirely engulf the volume simply define it.
-
Final full scale Paper and Wood cube exquisitely fabricated and an A2 analytique board containing:
-
plan 1:5
-
section 1:5
-
elevation 1:5 ( 1 or two elevation, depending on your design)
-
assembly diagram [sequence] scale to be determined
-
A CD ‐ MARKED WITH THE PROJECT AND STUDENT NAME ‐ CONTAINING A PDF OF THE BOARDS AND 3 HIGH RES, CLEANED UP PHOTOS OF THE FINAL CUBE AND ONE PHOTO OF THE PROCESS CUBE[S]
Design Concept :
PAPER CUBE
The design concept for my paper cube is to actually show that something, or someone no matter how tough or strong it is/they are, they sure must have a weakness somewhere beneath them. So I decided to make 11 hexagonal bases that is attached with small cylindrical pillars. The structure is actually a bit flimsy, which has a contrast with its physical look, as what I try to portray with the concept.
WOODEN CUBE
The design concept for this cube is to actually portray a spiral of life as well as a time tunnel. As we go through this time tunnel of life, we face a high point at certain point as well as a low point at the other but no matter where we are, it is up to us of how we want to view that situation whether to take it postively or negatively.

REFLECTION
What I've learned in this project is that I gained knowledge about these two materials (paper&wood) and got to know about their strength and limitations and also on the application of actually combining them together which I got to understand that certain bindings such as UHU glue, super glue, hot glue gun etc. cannot be used in certain areas of the design or material.
This assignment is designed to introduce building materials that are commonly used in the local construction industry. The spaces or building selected to study will allow one to understand the reasoning behind choices made by certain designer in terms of concept, functional use, environmental response, environmental profile, structural requirement, availability of resources and etc. when selecting or proposing a building material. It is also essential for students to see the transition from vernacular point of perspective to the current application in built environment.
In a group of 5, we were required to analyze an exisitng building whether it's a residential or a commercial block which allows us to experience and explore most of the building materials covered in the module. My group decided to choose one of the residential block located in Subang Jaya called the 'One Soho'.
Submission Requirements :
- Brief introduction of the selected building and the reason for selecting the space
- Mood Board : Should include color, pattern, photographs, sketches and informative design elements to reflect the materials used and ambience of the space without using any words or description
- Identification of materials
- Drawn out plans, sections and elevations to indicate materials
- Brief explanation of the types of materials used in a specific area/space
- Apllication of materials
- Physical and chemical properties of these materials
- Explain the suitabilty of the materials used in the context to concept, occupancy and climate
- Explain and illustrate the findings in detail in terms of suitability of the materials type, application, aesthetic, maintenance etc.
- Analysis must be presented in TWO A2 boards (Landscape). Mood board is a separate on its own.

This is an individual assignment where I was required to analyze a traditional shop lot located anywhere in Malaysia.
A shophouse, normally has two or more storeys, is a commercial and private structure. The tenants usually use the first floor for commercial purposes. The building is nto free standing; rather it is connected to several other shophouses, which creates a shophouse block. This shophouse block is repeated to form streets and town squares. The structure mainly consist of bricks, plaster, concrete and timber.

Submission Requirements :
- Experiental analysis of the material & space
- Experience within the space and how does the material selection and its application within the space affect the user's experience. (Scale, Proportion, installation etc.)
- Include diagrams to support your analysis (sketches, photographs)
- All analysis must be presented in ONE A2 board (Landscape)
The picture on top is an example of a traditional shop lot houses. This picture is located in a place called 'The Jonker Street' which is located in Malacca, Malaysia. This place is where I decided to do an analyctical research.

REFLECTION
I gained a lot of knowledge about building materials through this two project (2A & 2B). I gained the knowledge of knowing that each material comes in different varieties like for example wood, there is plywood, chipped boards etc. I also learned on how to analyse their physical as well as chemical properties for a specific material and how does the application of the material has an effect in the area/space and how does it create the ambience. I also gained the knowledge on how to apply certain materials that corresponds well with the design concept that I will be inventing in the near future.
