REFLECTION
The aim of project 1A is to understand the notion of space in architecture in terms of visualising the space through observation and perception of the given site and sketching it as a mode of communication. The places that I chose to sketch is the front facade of the Block D in Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus, Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar, outside the studio located in Block E level 3 and a living room. What I’ve learned from this assignment is that I learned on how to analyse a space and its qualities and then transfer it onto the paper via sketching.
Project 1B is an assignment whereby we have to choose any object of our choice and then sketch it by using four different techniques : scribbling, stippling, hatching and cross hatching. I learned on how to actually apply those techniques on certain areas of the object as different techniques requires different approach. I also gained the ability to create an outline by using these techniques instead of using a line.
This project is an introduction to design communication. Design Communication is a subject where we learn on how to communicate our ideas through sketching and technical drawings. This project is divided into two parts, where the first part we learned about how to produce an on site sketching because it is essential for architects to be able to sketch on site or a quick sketch and present it to our clients. The second part is about studying tonal values, where we learned on how to apply different kinds of rendering techniques in order to show the value of a certain object.
For the second project, we were required to re-designed the Farnsworth House. The Farnsworth House is located in Plano, Illinois, United States of America. Re-designing the house meant only re-designing the interior spaces, leaving the exterior side untouched. But we were allowed to make several changes to the doors, windows, the roof and also the material of the wall. Once we finished designing it in our own ways, we are to produced three different technical drawings :
- Plan, elevations, sections
- Axonometric
- Perspective drawings ( Rendered )
For the re-designing process, my intention was to actually make it more towards a place where you can call home instead of a getaway destination. So in contrast to an all open spaces, I implemented a few walls as partitions/walls that separates the public and private spaces. This includes two hollow spaces in the middle for ventilation purposes.
REFLECTION
What I've gained from this first project is the knowledge of how to get my ideas across to my client through technical drawings of plans, sections, and elevations so that he/she can see of how the structure most likely will look like, and does the distribution of spaces fulfill their wants and needs. I also learned that the application of using technical pens on a tracing paper requires certain skills and I can say a little bit of patience too. Overall, I'm very happy with the work that I've produced.
REFLECTION
This axonometric drawing project tought me on how to explode certain parts of the building in order to show the quality of spaces in the building. But I also learned that if I explode too many parts it wouldn't look good because in my opinion in an axonometric, yes the main point of it is to show the spaces that the building has, but not to forget the main structure of the building because exploding everything might confuse the client or the viewer who doesn't have an architectural background.
REFLECTION
This project is a combination of technical drawings as well as applying tonal values. Technical drawing in a sense of perspective, by choosing the perfect angle of the building that makes an interesting outlook for both exterior and interior. I've learned more towards applying the tonal values into the drawings for this project because we want to show the client/the viewers about the quality of the spaces, creating the ambience through applying different rendering techniques for different areas or material.
Overall, the subject - Design Communication is an enjoyable and at the same time educational for me. I've learned a lot about the critical process of thinking on how to actually portray your ideas in the best way possible to the audience/clients. Credits to Ms. Raihana for mentoring me all the way through the projects, guiding me towards the As that I've got!
